Sapphire is the birthstone for September.
Sapphire has long been associated with the colour of the sky and the blue sky was made with the reflection of sapphire stones. Kings wore sapphires to keep them from harm and it was said that the wearer would ward off envy and attract divine favour.
One of the more notorious sapphires in the world, the Star of India, is housed in the Museum of Natural History in New York.
